Short term car insurance

Ian Morrison's family was pretty far-flung. He had relatives who had been in the United States for two generations, two of his sisters lived in Australia and one brother was now a New Zealander. Ian and his brother Carl had always been very close as children, so it was not surprising that when Carl decided to have a holiday in Britain for the first time since emigrating 20 years ago Ian offered to put him up for a couple of weeks.

Although they had planned a number of excursions together it was not possible for Ian to spend all his time with Carl because of both work and family commitments, and as an outdoor lad Carl had no intention of sitting in the house all day so he looked at the cost of hiring a car for the duration of his stay there. Unfortunately, the local car hire company was not willing to deal with them when they found out that he was not a UK resident, and the others quoted higher charges which were completely outside his budget. Not a problem, Ian and his wife had two cars between them so they agreed to lend the smaller of the two to Carl for the duration of his holiday. The vehicle was already taxed of course, but what would they do about insurance? Carl had a car in New Zealand of course, but his policy only covered him for driving in that country. They contacted several insurance companies in the UK by telephone and spoke to their local insurance broker, all of whom were more than willing to sell Carl a 12 month policy at, since he did not have any no claims bonus in the UK, absolutely outrageous prices but none of them were able or willing to reduce the price in recognition of the fact that he would only be driving for a fortnight.

Fortunately Ian had heard on the grapevine that it was possible to find insurance policies for very short periods of time so he did a quick search on Bing and found a short term car insurance company. There was a very short form that had to be filled in; fortunately the fact that Carl's driving licence was a New Zealand one was no problem and after ten minutes of one fingered typing the deed was done; Carl pay by credit card and from then on he was insured to drive Ian's car for the next two weeks, a facility which he made full use of.

Short term car insurance is quite a new product which was brought out in answer to the demand for a more flexible insurance system; cover can be bought for any period between a day and for weeks, fully comp or third party only! Needless to say, this has proved to be a very popular product indeed, and although it is not suitable for every car insurance purpose it is a very useful service for everyone to be aware of.
